Photo-quality digital printing that reproduces every gradient, shadow, and color transition in your client's brand mark. No compromises on color fidelity.
Digital Printing Meets Precision Sign Fabrication
Many brand logos are far more complex than a simple two-color wordmark. Modern brand identities frequently incorporate gradients, photographic elements, metallic effects, drop shadows, and multi-color palettes that are impossible to reproduce using traditional cut-vinyl or painted methods. Full-color logo signs solve this challenge by combining high-resolution digital printing with the structural precision of contour-cut aluminum cabinets, delivering a sign that reproduces every nuance of the brand file with photographic accuracy.
At Sunlite Signs, our digital printing workflow is calibrated specifically for sign face applications — which have different requirements than standard wide-format printing. Sign faces must maintain color accuracy when backlit by LED modules, which shifts perceived color temperature and saturation compared to reflective (front-lit) viewing. We use ICC profiles tuned for translucent substrates and LED backlight color temperatures, so the colors your client approves on a proof match what they see on the finished, illuminated sign.
Our print capabilities cover the full range of logo complexity — from simple four-color process (CMYK) to expanded gamut printing with white ink under-base for vibrant colors on non-white substrates. We print first-surface (front of the face panel) and second-surface (behind the face panel) depending on the durability and optical requirements of the specific application. Every printed face is finished with a UV-protective overlaminate that guards against fading, scratching, and environmental degradation.
Print Technology & Color Management
Color accuracy in full-color logo signs depends on three factors: the print technology, the color management system, and the substrate/backlight interaction. Our electrical engineering ensures consistent backlighting. Sunlite Signs controls all three to deliver consistent, brand-standard results on every unit — supporting franchise logo programs and one-off projects alike.
- Printer: We use UV-curable wide-format printers that produce 1200 dpi resolution with exceptional dot placement accuracy. UV inks cure instantly under LED lamps, producing a durable, scratch-resistant ink film that doesn't require additional drying time
- Color Management: Our RIP software uses custom ICC profiles built for each face material and backlight combination. We proof every job on calibrated monitors and can provide physical laminated color proofs for brand-critical projects
- White Ink: For translucent faces that will be backlit, we print a controlled white ink layer behind the color image. The density and coverage of this white layer determines how the backlit and daylight appearance balance — too much white blocks the light, too little allows the LEDs to wash out the colors. We calibrate this for every project
The substrate selection also impacts color performance. We print on optically clear cast acrylic, opal translucent acrylic, and translucent polycarbonate depending on the illumination requirements. Second-surface printing (on the back of a clear face panel) produces the most vivid colors because the ink is protected behind the acrylic and viewed through a glossy surface that enhances saturation and depth. First-surface printing is used when the face panel is translucent and the print must be visible from the front without looking through the substrate.
Durability & Outdoor Performance of Printed Logo Faces
The most common question sign shops ask about digitally printed logo faces is: how long will the print last outdoors? It's a fair concern — our wholesale clients expect long-term performance — early generations of solvent and eco-solvent inks had significant fading issues, particularly with magenta and yellow channels that are UV-sensitive. Modern UV-curable inks have largely solved this problem, but print longevity still depends on the entire system, not just the ink.
Sunlite Signs specifies a complete durability stack for every full-color logo sign:
- UV-Curable Inks: Our UV inks are rated for 5+ years of outdoor exposure without significant color shift, per accelerated weathering tests (SAE J2527). This rating assumes unprotected exposure — lamination extends it significantly
- Protective Overlaminate: Every first-surface print receives a UV-filtering clear overlaminate that adds an additional 3-5 years of fade protection, physical scratch resistance, and chemical resistance against cleaning agents
- Second-Surface Protection: Prints applied to the back of clear or translucent acrylic are inherently protected from physical damage, UV degradation, and chemical exposure by the face panel itself. Second-surface prints routinely last 8-10 years in outdoor service
- Face Panel UV Stability: All acrylic face panels are UV-stabilized with a minimum 10-year warranty against yellowing and crazing from sun exposure
For franchise programs and national accounts where long-term color consistency is critical, we recommend second-surface printing on clear acrylic with a white ink under-base. This configuration delivers the best combination of color vibrancy, backlit performance, and outdoor durability — and it's the approach used by most major QSR and retail brands for their logo box signage programs.
