Channel Letter Installation Guide
Comprehensive installation guidance for sign professionals. From raceway mounting to direct flush mount — every Sunlite Signs order ships with detailed templates and specifications.
Mounting Methods & Site Preparation
Proper channel letter installation begins well before your crew arrives on site. Sunlite Signs provides full-scale paper mounting templates with every order, allowing precise hole placement and wire routing before letters are lifted into position. Our templates include centerline marks, mounting hole locations, wire penetration points, and level reference lines.
The three primary mounting methods each suit different building conditions:
Raceway Mounting is the most common method. Letters are pre-wired to an aluminum raceway (rectangular box) in our facility, shipped as a complete assembly, and bolted to the building fascia. This approach minimizes field wiring and speeds installation. Flush Mounting involves attaching individual letters directly to the building surface with threaded studs. Wiring runs behind the wall or through a wireway. This method produces a clean, floating appearance. Backer Panel Mounting uses an aluminum panel as an intermediate surface, allowing installation on uneven surfaces like stone, brick, or split-face block.
Our complimentary engineering team can review your site conditions and recommend the optimal mounting approach for each project.
Electrical Connections & Final Inspection
All electrical connections for channel letter installations must comply with the National Electrical Code and local amendments. Sunlite Signs provides detailed wiring diagrams with every order to support clean, code-compliant installations:
- Power Supply Placement: Locate remote power supplies in accessible, ventilated locations per NEC requirements. We specify minimum wire gauge and maximum run distances for each configuration
- Primary Connections: Input wiring from the building electrical panel to the power supply must be performed by a licensed electrician per local code
- Secondary Wiring: Low-voltage connections from power supply to letters are pre-terminated at our facility. Field connections use waterproof quick-connect fittings included with every order
- Grounding: All metal components must be properly grounded per NEC Article 600. We include grounding lugs and specifications with every letter set
After installation, perform a complete illumination test before final inspection. Check every letter for even illumination, verify power supply operation, and confirm all connections are secure. Our UL 48 listing documentation ships with every order to facilitate electrical inspection sign-off. Contact our engineering team with any field questions — support is complimentary.
