Channel Letter Sizing Guide
Proper letter sizing ensures visibility, code compliance, and aesthetic balance. Use this guide to specify the right dimensions for every project.
Visibility Distance & Letter Height
The fundamental purpose of channel letters is identification and visibility. The sign industry uses a well-established formula: 1 inch of letter height provides approximately 10 feet of readable distance. A 24-inch letter is readable from roughly 240 feet, while a 12-inch letter is readable from about 120 feet.
However, this formula is a starting point, not a rule. Several factors affect real-world readability:
Viewing Speed: Signs on highways need larger letters than signs on local streets because drivers have less time to read them. For 45+ mph roads, increase letter height by 20-30% over the baseline formula. Mounting Height: Letters mounted above the second story require increased height to compensate for the steeper viewing angle. Font Weight: Thin, light-weight fonts require larger sizes to achieve the same readability as bold, heavy fonts. Background Contrast: Letters on a contrasting background (dark letters on a light wall) are more readable than low-contrast combinations.
Sunlite Signs offers complimentary engineering consultations to help you specify the right letter height for each project's unique conditions.
Letter Depth, Stroke Width & Minimum Sizes
Beyond height, two additional dimensions affect channel letter specifications:
- Letter Depth (Return Height): Standard depths range from 3" to 5". Deeper returns house LED modules comfortably and produce even illumination. Shallower returns create a sleeker profile but may require higher-density LED placement. We recommend minimum 3.5" depth for most applications
- Stroke Width: The width of the letter's strokes determines the minimum practical size for illumination. Strokes narrower than 1" cannot accommodate standard LED modules. We recommend minimum 1.5" stroke width for reliable, even illumination
- Minimum Letter Height: For illuminated channel letters, we recommend 8" minimum height. Non-illuminated channel letters can be fabricated as small as 4" but require careful font selection
Local sign codes often dictate maximum letter height, total sign area, and illumination restrictions. Our complimentary engineering team reviews local code requirements when provided and can adjust specifications accordingly. Every order is UL 48 listed and ships within 3 weeks from approved artwork. We include detailed shop drawings showing all dimensions for your approval before production begins.
