Wholesale Steel Blade Signs Steel Blade Signs

Heavy-duty projecting signage built from welded steel for maximum rigidity and a commanding street presence. Galvanized or powder-coated for lasting durability.

When Steel Is the Right Choice for Blade Signs

Steel blade signs deliver a level of structural rigidity and visual substance that lighter materials simply cannot match. For large-format projecting signs, industrial-themed designs, or installations where the sign must project significant distance from the building face, steel provides the backbone needed to maintain flatness and resist wind-induced vibration.

Sunlite Signs fabricates steel blade signs using 16-gauge and 14-gauge mild steel, depending on the application. Every cabinet is MIG or TIG welded, ground smooth, and treated with a corrosion-protection system appropriate for the installation environment. For standard exterior applications, we apply a zinc-rich primer followed by a polyurethane topcoat. For coastal or industrial environments, we offer hot-dip galvanizing before paint for maximum corrosion resistance.

Our German engineering approach means that every steel blade sign is structurally analyzed before production. We calculate wind loads, bracket stress, and fastener pull-out values to ensure the sign performs safely for its rated lifespan. This level of engineering diligence separates Sunlite from commodity sign manufacturers.

Corrosion Protection & Finishing Systems

The primary concern with steel signage is corrosion, and we address it aggressively through our multi-layer protection system:

  • Standard Protection: Zinc-rich epoxy primer + polyurethane topcoat with UV stabilizers. Suitable for most inland installations with a 10+ year expected finish life.
  • Enhanced Protection: Hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A123, followed by a vinyl wash primer and polyurethane topcoat. Recommended for coastal zones, industrial areas, or regions with heavy road-salt use.
  • Powder Coat Option: Electrostatically applied thermoset powder coat over zinc-rich primer for a thick, durable, low-VOC finish.

All cut edges, drill holes, and weld areas receive additional primer treatment before topcoat application to eliminate potential corrosion initiation points. We don't rely on the topcoat alone to protect vulnerable areas — every surface gets proper preparation and priming.

Color options are virtually unlimited. We match PMS, RAL, and custom color specifications with consistent batch-to-batch accuracy. Textured finishes, including hammered, wrinkled, and sand textures, are available through our powder-coat process.

Structural Advantages for Large-Format Signs

Steel excels in applications where the blade sign needs to be physically large or project far from the building face. Here's why structural performance matters in those scenarios:

A blade sign acts as a cantilever — it's supported at the wall and unsupported at the free end. As the sign gets longer or projects farther, the bending moment at the wall connection increases dramatically. Steel's higher modulus of elasticity (roughly three times that of aluminum) means it deflects less under wind load, keeping the sign rigid and visually stable even in gusty conditions.

  • Signs projecting 36" or more from the building face benefit significantly from steel construction
  • Large signs (over 36" x 48") maintain better flatness with steel panels
  • Steel brackets provide higher pull-out resistance in masonry connections

Sunlite Signs provides stamped structural engineering for steel blade sign installations upon request. This documentation is often required by local building departments for signs of significant size or projection distance, and we include it as part of our engineering support for trade partners.
