Acrylic Face Materials & Color Range
The acrylic face is the most visible component of a front lit channel letter — it determines the color, light transmission, and visual impact of the finished sign. Sunlite Signs uses premium acrylic sheet from Plaskolite and Acrylite, the two leading manufacturers of sign-grade translucent acrylic. These materials are specifically formulated for outdoor signage applications with excellent UV stability, color consistency, and light transmission properties.
Our stock includes over 40 standard translucent colors plus white, covering the vast majority of brand color requirements. For colors outside our standard range, we offer custom color-matching using either custom-cast acrylic or digitally printed vinyl overlays on white acrylic. Both methods produce accurate PMS and RAL color matches with excellent outdoor durability.
Each acrylic face is CNC-routed from solid sheet stock to match the letter opening precisely. For our trimless letters, the face is routed to fit within the return channel with flush alignment. For trim cap letters, the face is cut slightly oversize to seat behind the trim cap retainer. All acrylic faces are flame-polished on exposed edges and inspected for clarity, color consistency, and dimensional accuracy before installation in the letter housing.
Light Transmission & LED Pairing
Selecting the right acrylic face color involves href="/signs/led-illumination-types-for-signs">LED illumination types and balancing daytime appearance with nighttime illumination. Sunlite Signs provides guidance on acrylic-to-LED pairing for optimal results:
White Acrylic with Colored LEDs: This approach uses white translucent acrylic with color-specific LED modules behind it. The advantage is simpler inventory management and the ability to change the sign color by swapping LED modules. The disadvantage is slightly less saturated color compared to colored acrylic.
Colored Acrylic with White LEDs: This is the standard approach and produces the most vibrant, saturated color output. White LED modules provide maximum brightness, and the acrylic face filters the light to the desired color. This method produces deeper, richer colors and is preferred for most brand-color applications.
Digital Print on White Acrylic: For multi-color logos, gradients, and photographic images, we apply digitally printed translucent vinyl to white acrylic faces. The print is rated for 5-7 years of outdoor use before noticeable fading. This technique enables full-color channel letter signage that would be impossible with single-color acrylic sheets.
