Wholesale Aluminum Push-Through Signs Aluminum Push-Through Signs
CNC-routed aluminum panels paired with dimensional acrylic letters for signs that combine structural strength with striking visual depth. Built for the trade.
The Role of Aluminum in Push-Through Sign Construction
Aluminum is the backbone of every push-through sign, just as it is for aluminum channel letters. It serves as the structural panel through which acrylic letters are pushed, the cabinet housing that contains the LED system, and often the mounting framework that secures the assembly to the building — all covered by our complimentary engineering. Its combination of light weight, corrosion resistance, and machinability makes it uniquely suited for this application — no other commercially available metal delivers the same balance of properties at a comparable cost.
At Sunlite Signs, we work exclusively with 5052-H32 and 6061-T6 aluminum alloys for our push-through sign panels. The 5052-H32 alloy offers superior corrosion resistance and is our standard choice for coastal installations, while 6061-T6 provides higher tensile strength for signs that must span large unsupported distances or resist significant wind loads.
Our CNC routing process removes material from the aluminum panel to create the letter-shaped openings through which acrylic forms are inserted. We program each routing operation to account for the specific alloy's machining characteristics, tool wear patterns, and the thermal behavior of the panel during cutting. The result is a panel with burr-free, dimensionally precise cutouts that accept the acrylic letters with a clean friction fit — no hand-finishing required.
CNC Routing Process and Panel Specifications
Precision CNC routing is what separates a professional-grade push-through sign from a subpar one. At Sunlite Signs, our routing operation is managed by a team of experienced CNC programmers who understand the nuances of cutting aluminum — the same expertise behind our aluminum flat cut letters for sign applications.
Our standard panel specifications include:
- Panel Thickness: 0.125" (1/8") for signs up to 48" wide; 0.188" (3/16") for larger panels or high-wind installations. Custom gauges available on request.
- Maximum Panel Size: 60" x 144" single-piece panels. Larger signs are fabricated with seamless spliced panels using internal backing plates.
- Routing Tolerance: ±0.010" on all letter cutouts, verified by digital inspection before letters are test-fitted.
- Surface Finish: Panels are sanded, primed, and painted with automotive-grade polyurethane in any PMS, RAL, or custom color. Metallic, matte, satin, and gloss finishes available.
For illuminated push-through signs, the routed panel is integrated into a welded aluminum cabinet. Our standard cabinet depths are 4", 5", and 6", with custom depths available for signs that require specific LED throw distances or deeper letter protrusion. All cabinets feature internal mounting rails for LED modules, wiring channels for clean cable management, and access panels for post-installation servicing.
Every panel is serialized and tracked through our production system, so we maintain full traceability from raw material through finished assembly. This level of process control is part of our German engineering heritage and ensures consistent quality order after order.
Durability, Finishing, and Weather Performance
Aluminum push-through signs are built to withstand decades of outdoor exposure with minimal maintenance — similar to our illuminated cabinet signs. The inherent corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys, combined with our multi-layer finishing process, creates a sign surface that resists fading. Our structural engineering ensures wind-load compliance throughout the sign's service life, chalking, and oxidation in even the most demanding environments.
Our finishing process includes:
- Surface Preparation: Panels are cleaned, etched with chromate conversion coating, and primed with a high-adhesion epoxy primer.
- Paint System: Two coats of automotive-grade polyurethane paint, followed by a UV-resistant clear coat. This system is rated for 10+ years of outdoor exposure without significant color shift.
- Edge Treatment: All routed edges are deburred and sealed to prevent moisture ingress at the letter-to-panel interface.
For coastal and high-humidity environments, we offer an upgraded marine-grade finishing package that includes additional primer coats and a thicker clear-coat layer. We have supplied push-through signs to locations throughout the Gulf Coast, Pacific Northwest, and Caribbean without premature finish failure.
Structurally, our aluminum panels and cabinets are engineered to meet IBC wind-load requirements for the installation location. We provide stamped engineering drawings upon request for jurisdictions that require them during the permitting process. Sign shops can count on a product that is not only visually impressive but structurally sound for the long term.
